What is maya? Matching the things/people with other things/people when there is, actually speaking, no connection at all? Ultimately, maya means the illusion that it creates as dualism exists. In reality, the rishis say that there is no such dualism. They say that the life that we experience here now is just an illusion. When I say illusion, it does not mean that it doesn’t exist. It does. It is the manifestation of the supreme being. Where will all this energy be if it is not manifested? In that sense, there is no god apart from us, the matter on this planet. Everything is god. But is that the ultimate reality? I beg to differ. There is a mahavakya in the Vedas that proclaim that it is you. Tat-twam-asi, that being you is exactly the state that I am searching for.

In my mind I have formulated a theory where I see this as a program. A world inside the reality or the world covered by the reality. Isha vaasyam idam sarvam. The world is covered up by god. This leaves us with a dual nature. You and the rest of the world. When you feel or imbibe the essence of god, the rest of the world is only maya. When you are not, you become a part of the maya. The only way to eradicate maya from your mind is to think that the we are one and the same with the universe. Like a sea where all the rivers come and dissolve as one. But the problem or the talent of maya is such that it forces you to think otherwise. The truth is that you are you and no one else. But maya constantly tells you that you are this, that, and what not. That is where the Vedas proclaim ‘neti, neti’: not this, not this. You are not anything lower that the perfect, complete being known to man as brahma. The moment you impose anything lesser than this on you, you become the victim of maya. This leaves us to think what the difference between maya and god is. That is when the Vedas say ‘yama sa maya’, which means that maya is non-existent. 

Then, why is it that we are forced to believe that we are this matter? This is the question that Hindus are seeking to answer. Why is there a multitude of manifestations? Where is all this energy when one eon ends? It is said that they are in a state of inactivity like the way we are in deep sleep. It is still existing but in a very subtle form. It has the potential to grow, transform and evolve into something that is enormous in number. This can be related to the way a tree is inside the seed. It is not in its full existence but only in a subtle form. When the appropriate time comes, they become active and sprout out. This is just like a worm that goes into deep hibernation.

Why is it that when we move into another life, we have to learn all the new things? This is like a person who was in cryo-sleep, forced to wake up. He/she may have gone into that state many years ago but has to adjust to the surroundings when they wake up after a long time. Thus, the body needs to be taught how to adjust to the surroundings by others. The time that it takes to regain all the knowledge depends on the past inherent tendencies. This is why we need gurus in human form at first to lead us to the right path. A guru can identify the reason why you are suffering this ignorance towards the truth.
